Alice Eve Grabs Lead in 'Star Trek 2'

Filed under:

Vincent Chase would be so proud. Alice Eve -- who you may remember as Vince's fiance from the ridiculous final season of 'Entourage' -- is director J.J. Abrams's choice to play the female lead in 'Star Trek 2.' Variety reports that Eve will play a new character "in the 'Star Trek' universe" and hopefully arm wrestle Uhura (returning cast member Zoe Saldana) for female Trekkie supremacy. 'Trek 2' is due in theaters on May 17, 2013. It will obviously be in 3D.

Heather Mills Accused of Sucking, Stiffing Stylist

Heather Mills is a b!tch who spread horrible lies about Paul McCartney and a cheapskate who never paid for $5,000 haircuts, according to a lawsuit.

Mills is being sued by her former hairstylist David Paul, who says starting 2005, Mills often hired him at his out-of-shop rate of $5,000-per-day.

Her goal? To become a celebrity.

Heather M.

At least he gave Heather some great hair ... NOT!

According to the suit, David claims Mills told him she couldn't afford to pay him up front, but promised she'd deliver the green when McCartney - her then husband - gave her money to do so. Guess that never ended up happening.

David claims Mills used his services at least 20 times, but never paid up, even after she received a multi-million dollar divorce settlement from Paul.

David says Mills began to avoid him in 2008, after he made several requests for his paychecks -which totaled $80,000 - she never, ever paid him.

Worse yet, Mills says Heather would tell terrible lies about McCartney, insisting he was "a cheap tyrant who was often a drunk and abusive husband."

Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell, a seemingly nicer and more stable influence on his life than wife #2 ended up being, got married this month.

'Hugo' Director Martin Scorsese Speaks On His Productivity, Legacy

'One tries to do the best you can with each picture, hopefully continue making them,' renowned filmmaker tells us.
By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Martin Scorsese's career is one of such significance and acclaim that the Oscar-winning director could retire from the business right now, knowing that his living-legend status would remain intact. It is clear he has no plans to slow down, however, due to the fact that in the last year alone, he's been involved in five feature film and documentary projects, the most recent being his first family-oriented film, the critically acclaimed "Hugo."

When MTV News caught up with Scorsese recently, we asked him to explain the secrets behind his productivity. "There seems to be a sort of urgency, an interest in making comments on certain aspects of life and the world around me, the people, culture today," Scorsese said when asked if he's working under his own self-imposed deadlines or urgency to complete projects. "Whether it's trying to deal with how art inspires a young person — and that is 'A Letter to Elia' — or trying to create a spectacle of American enterprise and corruption as [with] Terry Winter and his show that I'm working on with him, 'Boardwalk Empire,' or people speaking their minds and very strong opinions, like Fran Lebowitz in 'Public Speaking,' but even more so was working for five or six years on 'George Harrison: Living in the Material World,' with David Tedeschi. That is interesting because that was finished at the same time as 'Hugo.' Those five projects were finally released all within one year."

We then asked if with this sudden urgency, Scorsese is conscious or concerned with preserving his legacy as a filmmaker.

"Not really, maybe I [was] at one point," he admitted. "I'm not quite sure anymore. I don't really know. I think at one point in the early '90s, there seemed to be a lot of films being made here in America and in China and around the world that had been inspired by 'Mean Streets' ... that may still be the case that may not be the case, I don't know anymore. One tries not to think of that. One tries to do the best you can with each picture, hopefully continue making them and that they mean something, that they matter to people."

Check out everything we've got on "Hugo."

Dr. Conrad Murray: STILL No Regrets!

Despite its role in earning him a four-year prison sentence, Dr. Conrad Murray doesn't regret for a second filming the now-infamous documentary about his trial.

In said documentary, he said he didn't regret his actions because he didn't do anything wrong ... a jury disagreed and convicted him of involuntary manslaughter.

The making of the film, which was released after Murray's conviction but before his sentencing, in the Michael Jackson death trial, infuriated Judge Michael Pastor.

Doctor Murray

Murray's lawyers freely admit he needed the money, but the Conrad Murray documentary was made primarily so that the public could hear his side of the story.

Maybe he should've tried testifying trial OR sentencing then. Eh, whatever.

The 56-year-old physician told friends and family that he knew he was going to get the maximum sentence, and that the documentary didn't play a role.

Thus, it didn't bother him that Pastor lambasted him over the things he said in the film, in particular, trashing MJ and not taking blame for his actions.

Moreover, Murray is "surprisingly upbeat" about the sentence, telling a friend, "I'm just relieved it's over," adding, "Don't worry, I'm fine, I'll be out soon."

Too soon, according to Michael's family.

Tom Hanks May Star in In the Garden of Beasts

Tom HanksTom Hanks' Playtone production company is set to produce the film version of Erik Larson's bestseller In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has picked up the film rights and Hanks' could possibly star as well as produce.

More on In the Garden of Beasts from Erik Larson's site: "With this new book, I invite you to journey to Berlin during Hitler's first year in power, 1933, in the company of a real-life father and daughter from Chicago who suddenly found themselves transported to the heart of the city. They had no conception of the harrowing days that lay ahead. At the time, nothing was certain--Hitler did not yet possess absolute power, and few outsiders expected his government to survive. The family encountered a city suffused with energy and optimism, with some of the most striking, avant-garde buildings in the world. Its theaters, concert halls, and cafés were jammed; the streets teemed with well-dressed attractive people. But my two protagonists were about to begin an education that would change them forever, with ultimately tragic consequences.

Jessica Simpson: Pregnancy in Crisis?

After confirming she is pregnant just before Halloween, Jessica Simpson has been on cloud nine. After years of romantic woes, a lifelong dream is coming true.

But is it all on the verge of crashing down?

As Jessica grows bigger with every day, so do emotional and medical crises that are ruining what should be an ecstatic time, according to a report in OK!

We know, we know. They claim the strife over her now-delayed wedding to Eric Johnson, and medical problems, are threatening her health and her child.

Baby Crisis

Not every day to you see a tabloid make up a miscarriage threat.

"She's said it's been a difficult pregnancy, she's been dizzy and nauseous," a pal says.

Adds another insider: "She was unprepared for how hard it would be on her body."

We're sure she's fine, physically. As far as her supposed betrayal by Eric Johnson, that's another story. Their relationship was fast track, and their pregnancy likely unplanned.

Their wedding date had to be scuttled, and now there's reportedly tension over a prenup. Are they still happy? Will they tie the knot next year? We hope so, but time will tell.

'Hugo': The Reviews Are In!

Most critics praise film's visuals and performances, although some take issue with its length.
By Eric Ditzian

Asa Butterfield in "Hugo"
Photo: Paramount Pictures

We're big "Hugo" fans here in the MTV Newsroom, as we make clear over at Movies Blog, calling Martin Scorsese's 3-D film a "love letter to cinema" and "like nothing you've ever seen from the Oscar-winning filmmaker before."

We're not the only ones raving about it. Critics are celebrating the movie's bold visual style and strong performances. The only issue anyone seems to have with "Hugo" is that there's just too much of it: The story — following the young orphan Hugo's (Asa Butterfield) adventures in a 1930s Parisian metro station, his battles with the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his friendship with a girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) also living in the station who is being raised by film pioneer Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley) — chugs forward too slowly before finally springing to life. Read on for those critiques and more in our "Hugo" review roundup.

The Story " 'Hugo' is the tale of a boy, one of fiction's sentimental orphans, and the world he invents, yet, unsurprisingly, its most heartfelt passages are about Méliès. The old filmmaker is as broken and in need of revival as the automaton, and while you can guess what happens, it's the getting there — how the clock is wound — that surprises and often delights. Waves of melancholy wash over the story and keep the treacle at bay, as do the spasms of broad comedy, much of it nimbly executed by Mr. Baron Cohen." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

< b>The Visuals " 'Hugo's' use of the third dimension is exceptionally well thought out and essential to the film's ability to make a children's vision of the world come to life. Making that world a Parisian one has also inspired 'Hugo's' visual team, led by production designer Dante Ferretti, and the film's numerous shots floating over the rooftops of Paris are always fantastic. As with the original novel, the wordless parts of 'Hugo,' including a masterful re-creation of a famous train wreck, are very much its strength." — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

The Performances "Although he ultimately comes through with a winning performance, Butterfield, previously seen in 'Son of Rambow' and 'The Wolfman,' seems a bit stiff and uncertain in the early-going. ... By contrast, Moretz ('Kick-Ass,' 'Let Me In'), with her beaming warmth and great smile, is captivating as a girl who leaps at the chance for some adventure outside of books. Refusing to sentimentalize, Kingsley catches both the deeply submerged hurt and eventual pride of an artist long but not forever erased from history." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Finale "[D]uring 'Hugo's' final 20 minutes or so, when Scorsese mounts a lavish reenactment of those early days of the art form, the film truly comes to life, as the story's preoccupation with mechanics and logistical dot-connecting gives way to imagination, magic and swashes of lurid color. ... With the director so clearly in his element and so affectionately in control, 'Hugo' ends as a triumph, bursting with the poetry, verve and irrepressible love befitting a match made in movie heaven." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Final Word "[T]he story — period details and mysteries notwithstanding — is too slight to support this length. It's an 80 minute bon bon struggling to break out of a two hour and ten minute souffle. Still, movie buffs, especially fans of early cinema history, will be transfixed by scenes in the latter acts — movie-making, as it was being invented. It's why Scorsese chose to make the film. It's where his heart truly is with this material. And it's no surprise that this corner of his wondrous little picture is where he chose to take a cameo, immortalizing himself in the history of the medium he grew up loving and mastering." — Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

Megyn Kelly on UC Davis Pepper Spray Scandal: No Big Deal!

Earlier this week, police on the campus of the University of California-Davis used pepper spray to subdue protesting students. The maneuver - which you can watch on tape HERE - caused outrage across the Internet.

But Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly has no idea why.

"It's like a derivative of actual pepper," she actually said on air yesterday. "It's a food product, essentially."

Kelly acknowledged the video "looks bad," as officers in riot gear unleashed the substance on a group of relatively calm individuals. But they didn't really react, so might the cops have used a "diluted" version of the product, she wonders?

Watch the clip above and react: Kelly is...

Herman Cain to Quit Presidential Race Amid Scandal?

Amid a flurry of salacious allegations, GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain is thinking seriously about becoming former GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain.

All before a single vote has been cast in the race, no less.

The Georgia businessman told his staff this morning that he's "reassessing" his bid for the White House after yet another female accuser - Ginger White - came forward with accusations against him, specifically that they had a 13-YEAR affair.

The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for January 3. While he no longer has frontrunner status, polling indicates Cain could still be competitive in Iowa.

Cain has denied the affair allegations in public and did so again during the conference call, but told his staff, "Obviously, this is cause for reassessment."

Before Ginger White, four other women accused Cain of sexual harassment during his tenure as head of the National Restaurant Association in the '90s.

He refuted those claims as well, but acknowledged that with White, he says, "we have to reassess whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud, in some people’s minds, as to whether or not they would be able to support us going forth."

Cain admits he knows White, but had only been trying to help her out financially ... as a friend. No word if Gloria Cain will back him up on that one.

'Breaking Dawn' No Turkey At Box Office

'Twilight' flick stays on top, besting family fare including 'Muppets,' 'Hugo.'
By Ryan J. Downey

The re-emergence of Kermit and his pals wasn't enough to knock Bella Swan and her new husband off the box-office throne. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" remained the #1 movie in America over the long holiday weekend as the romantic vampires-and-werewolves flick fended off competition from PG-rated newcomers "Arthur Christmas" and "Hugo."

The second-to-last "Twilight" movie generated an additional $62.3 million from Wednesday to Sunday for an overall domestic total of $221.3 million, according to estimates released by Summit Entertainment. Despite suffering from the same critical drubbing typically inflicted upon "Twilight" movies, "Breaking Dawn" triumphed against a trio of well-reviewed flicks with broad family appeal.

Comedic actor Jason Segel's "Muppets" debuted with $42 million over the five-day period. The celebrity-cameo-filled revival of the beloved television and movie franchise opened much more strongly than previous Muppet movies. Even with adjustments for ticket-price inflation, the newest "Muppets" overtook 1996's "Muppet Treasure Island," the previous series' strongest box-office debut. The reboot of sorts was a labor of love for co-writer and star Segel, who made his adoration for felt puppets clear in 2008's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

"Happy Feet 2" was the #3 movie over the weekend. But with a production budget nearly triple that of "The Muppets," the animated sequel's $44 million gross ($18.5 million of which was collected over the weekend) couldn't keep the Australian digital production facility that worked on the movie from laying off 600 of its 700 employees, according to a report from Australian film news site if.com.au.

"Arthur Christmas" opened far behind "The Muppets" at #4 with just $17 million. The 3-D movie, from the British animation house behind "Wallace & Gromit," cost Sony Pictures an estimated $100 million to produce. Aardman Animations' "Flushed Away" and "Chicken Run" earned more in their respective three-day opening weekends than the five-day total for their latest movie.

Despite playing on 2,000 fewer screens than "Arthur Christmas," Martin Scorsese's live-action 3-D love letter to classic cinema, "Hugo," was #5 with $15.4 million. The filmmaker best known for violent adult dramas like "Goodfellas" based his first foray into family fare on the popular children's book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." Roughly 75 percent of the film's grosses were reportedly from pricier 3-D screenings, according to Paramount. "Hugo" played at 1277 venues and is scheduled to expand to 2000 on December 9.

The weekend wasn't without Oscar-bait dramas for adults. The Weinstein Company's "My Week With Marilyn" made $2 million in 244 theaters while the company's black-and-white silent film, "The Artist," made $210,000 in just four New York and Los Angeles theaters.

The box office was down 12 percent overall from the same period last year, when "Tangled" was new in theaters against a "Harry Potter" movie and "MegaMind." "Tangled" was #1 with $68.7 million compared to the $62.3 million made by "Breaking Dawn."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and "The Muppets."

People's Court Scandal: Dale Smith Targeted By Police in Michelle Parker Disappearance

Michelle Parker and Dale Smith, a formerly engaged couple, appeared on the People's Court earlier this month. After the show, Parker mysteriously vanished.

Now Smith is in the wind as well, having just been named the primary suspect in her disappearance, according to Orlando, Fla., Police Chief Paul Rooney.

Officials confirm Smith, who appeared with Michelle Parker on the show, arguing over the engagement ring he have her, is the target of the investigation.

Chief Rooney says Smith refused to take a polygraph test in the case.

Parker's mother, Yvonne Stewart, made a plea during a Monday news conference: "If you could have avoided this Dale, if you had cooperated with the police and if you took a polygraph test when they asked you, you could have avoided a lot of stress."

"We're not going to stop until we find out who did this," she adds.

According to public records, the pair was involved in a domestic violence case involving children in 2009. Parker and Smith have 3-year-old twins together.

Parker has been missing since Nov. 17, the day the show aired.

Pooch Hall Reveals JAIL STINT At Bayou Classic!

Over the weekend, Lance Gross and Pooch Hall were among the celebrities in New Orleans for the Bayou Classic at the Superdome. And they did a bit of good between all the parties.  During a panel where they shared their life experiences with today's youth, Pooch Hall revealed a jail stint from his past.  Deets inside.....

Over the weekend, Do-Gooder YBF stars Lance Gross, BET's "The Game" actor, Pooch Hall and "ATL" star Jackie Long hosted a celebrity panel for The "Achieve One" Youth Empowerment Summit during the annual Southern University and Grambling State University Bayou Classic Weekend.

During the panel, the actor told the 500 students how they overcame set backs as black actors, told students to stay focused and out of trouble and urged students to never give up.

Pooch Hall shockingly revealed,

"Not too many people know this, but I had a run in with the law years and years ago where I was jailed for four months. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong people. It's important that you have good influences and surround yourself around good people because not everyone gets a second chance like I did."

And Lance Gross added,

"One of the biggest struggles I faced growing up was being a shy kid. I had to learn to overcome this and although I'm still a shy guy I haven't let it hold me back from opportunities."

Jackie Long urged kids to write down their dreams and stay focused.

"It's important that you write down your goals and dreams whatever they may be, said Long. Then once you do that you start knocking them off one by one and if you get delayed don't give up. Keep going."

Also at the panel were Lamonte' Cole; Principal, speaker and guest host, Sevetri Wilson; non-profit & celebrity charity consultant and developer of the "Achieve One" Celebrity Teen Summit Tour, Edward "Ted" James; summit panelist, Louisiana State Representative and Attorney,  Film and TV Actor; Lance Gross, Kim Turner; Outreach Director and guest panelist, The Game Actor; Pooch Hall, ATL star; Jackie Long, Dr. Calvin Mackie; nationally renown public speaker and motivational speaker, Kwame Asante; Attorney,  "Achieve One" Celebrity Teen Summit Creator and Executive Director of The Achievement Academy.

Pooch greeted Miss Southern University

And he and Jackie posed with the SU cheerleaders.

Meanwhile, Lance posed wtih SU's Dancing Dolls.

Fab times!  And congrats to Grambling State University for copping that football title this weekend.

Affleck stepped out today in Santa Monica with a new, shaggy hairstyle, one that can be attributed to his upcoming role on Argo, a film he's directing, producing and appearing in. Guess we can forgive the guy for not having time to get a haircut.

Jeremy London: Wanted by Police Following Alleged Assault

Jeremy London is a wanted man.

The actor - best known for his former role on Party of Five and a recent patient on Celebrity Rehab - is on the run after his girlfriend called the Palm Springs Police Department Friday due to an argument over custody of their child that allegedly resulted in an assault.

Jeremy London Photograph

"This is a false allegation and we understand that the police have to follow protocol in issuing an arrest warrant - standard when any woman files a complaint of domestic abuse," London's rep told People. "However, no such abuse occurred and these allegations will soon be proven false.

"Jeremy's legal counsel is cooperating with authorities and a factual account of the incident is on record. We anticipate Jeremy to be cleared of any wrongdoing as he continues to enjoy fatherhood and embrace sobriety."

London has been involved in a number of unusual incidents over the past year or so, the most bizarre being a kidnapping in the summer of 2010, during which the actor says he was held at gunpoint.

Tinglan Hong, Hugh Grant Baby Mama, Seeks Injunction Against Paparazzi

Hugh Grant's baby mama Tinglan Hong is going to extremes to protect her privacy.

A British High Court approved an injunction on behalf of the actress, with whom Hugh had an unplanned child in September, forbidding paparazzi from snapping pics of her and the newborn outside her London home or in the street.

She welcomed Grant's first child, a girl, in late September.

Per the BBC, a judge granted the court order on November 11 stating that celebrity gossip media members were making the 31-year-old's life "unbearable."

Consequently according to the court, Hong, whom Grant is no longer seeing, has been forced to change her phone number after receiving "terrifying" calls.

The little bundle of joy is a girl, but Tinglan Hong has apparently not settled on a name. Instead the court refers to her in court docs by the initials KLM.

"While Hugh Grant is very well known, the first claimant [Ms. Hong] never sought any publicity or been known to the public for any reason," wrote the judge.

"She and Mr. Grant did their best to keep private the fact that the second claimant was their child and do not know how the information reached the public."

Celebrity Hair Affair: Dianna Agron Goes Pink

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Dianna Agron says she wants to be known for her talent over her personal life.

That's an admirable stance, but we need to ask: what about her hair color?

The Glee star has gone Pink. Not like Taylor Swift, although we have little doubt this actress could pull off any rock anthem she wanted. Instead, Agron has undergone a dramatic hairstyle switch. What do you think of the change? And which color do you like better on her?

'Breaking Dawn': How Long Can It Top The Box Office?

'Twilight' flick blew past 'The Muppets,' but faces formidable holiday-movie competition in the coming weeks.

The box-office battle of Thanksgiving weekend has come and gone, and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" once again emerged as the victor.

The penultimate entry in the vampire romance series pulled off an impressive haul of an estimated $62.3 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. The weekend brought the film's domestic total to roughly $221 million, as it survived formidable competition from "The Muppets," which earned a respectable $42 million.

But what do the upcoming weeks hold for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1"? We consulted some box-office experts to find out.

One of the biggest questions right now for "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is whether it will continue to dominate the box office for a third week in a row. With only "Shame" — a small indie film by comparison — opening next week, the stage is set for another rematch between "Breaking Dawn" and "The Muppets." Phil Contrino from Boxoffice.com said there is some potential for growth in the case of "The Muppets."

"It'll be close between ['Breaking Dawn - Part 1'] and 'The Muppets,' because ['The Muppets'] has much better word of mouth," he said, but he indicated that it was too soon to say which would come out on top.

Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations, on the other hand, sees the weekend going to "The Muppets." The fight for second place will be between "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and "Hugo," he said.

" 'Breaking Dawn' is performing almost identically to 'New Moon' and will likely dip another 60 to 65 percent next weekend and gross $14 million to 16 million," Bock said. "That probably won't keep it at #1, as family films hold exceptionally well during the holiday season. That means 'The Muppets' will jump to #1, and depending on how many screens 'Hugo' jumps to, it may be in a fight for second place."

Both Bock and Contrino expect "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" to finish its domestic run in the range of $300 million but say that we should expect a steep drop-off once more holiday films like "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" hit theaters.

"It's still going to fall fast," Contrino said. "By the time 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' and 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' hit, the audience will have almost entirely disappeared."

'Hugo': The Reviews Are In!

Most critics praise film's visuals and performances, although some take issue with its length.
By Eric Ditzian

LeAnn Rimes-Brandi Glanville Twitter Feud: The Return!

Looks like LeAnn Rimes and Brandi Glanville are going at it again ... on Twitter, obviously. What better way to instigate a feud than under the cover of social media!

Eddie Cibrian's ex-wife Brandi is upset this time because their two sons, Mason and Jake, spent Thanksgiving with Eddie and LeAnn Rimes, EVIL stopmom that she is.

Moreover, he's trying to get them for Christmas too. Brandi claims Eddie sent her a threatening e-mail about their custody pact. Then LeAnn Tweeted this photo:

LeAnn Rimes, Eddie Cibrian Twitpic

This story has nothing to do with Eddie Cibrian's sweet mustache. But discuss!

Brandi also says she thinks her custody fight is one of the reasons The Playboy Club got canceled and he's punishing her for it in return. Does that have merit?

Who's to say. But The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills hot mess has a way with words, particularly online, and quickly fired off this Tweet to a friend about it:

Glanville Tweetage

Now, LeAnn Rimes is usually the type to mix it up on Twitter with the best of them, but believe it or not, she actually took the high road here ... mostly.

Asked by The Babble to respond, she said Twitter feuds are beneath her, which is odd since she's been in a ton, and sort of digs at Brandi anyway:

"Until private, family matters can stay that way we cannot communicate properly and through a public forum is not the way. I have fallen short myself out of anger, but for the kids sake only try to share happiness."

"It's no one's business, our family business and since you will not hear both sides of the story no one should jump to conclusions. I do not know what has been said except for what I just read, but it's far from the truth, I will say that."

And there you go. Until Round #29 ...
