'Hunger Games' Director Gary Ross Circles 'Houdini'

After turning down 'Catching Fire,' Ross may helm big-screen adaptation of 'The Secret Life of Houdini.'

"Hunger Games" fans were dismayed when director Gary Ross released a statement saying he wasn't going to helm the film's sequel, "Catching Fire." His previous works have been few and far between. Before adapting the dystopian novel, Ross directed "Pleasantville" in 1998 and "Seabiscuit" in 2003, and fans wondered if he would disappear off Hollywood's radar for a while. But Ross' next project might happen sooner rather than later.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ross is in talks with Summit to direct "Houdini," an adaptation of the book "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. While recounting the master escape artist's life from poverty to fame, the biography suggests that the magician who commanded the attention of countless audiences worked as a spy for Britain and the Secret Service.

In Lionsgate's own statement on Gary Ross' departure from "The Hunger Games" franchise, they wrote, "[Gary Ross] did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future."

Since Lionsgate bought Summit earlier this year, it's quite possible this is the other project they had in mind for the director. THR also reports that Summit optioned the rights to the book back in March of 2009 and their goal is to turn it into an action franchise in the same vein as "Indiana Jones" and "Sherlock Holmes." Noah Oppenheim already wrote the script, but having penned every screenplay he's directed, it's possible Ross may want to edit or re-write it if he signs on for the project.

Coincidentally, THR notes that Francis Lawrence, the director who signed on for "Catching Fire," is attached to his own Houdini venture for Columbia Pictures.

'Catching Fire': Francis Lawrence To Direct 'Hunger Games' Sequel

The speculation is over: Lionsgate has officially announced that Francis Lawrence will direct "Catching Fire," the sure-to-be-epic follow-up to "The Hunger Games."

Lawrence is replacing Gary Ross, who didn't feel he could deliver the sequel in time for the immovable November 22, 2013 release date. Ross' move didn't necessarily sit well with the cast -- Josh Hutcherson told THR, "Gary in my mind is the only one that could ever direct the second one" -- or legions of fans, but the show must go on as scheduled. In a statement released to Movieline, producer Nina Jacobson praised Lawrence, (whose previous films include "I Am Legend" and "Water for Elephants"), saying "From my first conversation with Francis, I knew he would make a great partner for both me and Suzanne. His passion for 'Catching Fire 'and inspired ideas for a faithful adaptation make him the perfect director for this movie. I know this will be a wonderful collaboration and I cannot wait to get started.” Lawrence is understandably happy to be on board one of Hollywood's biggest franchises, stating, "It is truly an honor and a privilege to bring 'Catching Fire,' the second chapter of Suzanne's beloved trilogy, to the big screen. I fell in love with the characters, the themes and the world she created and this chapter opens all of these elements up in such a thrilling, emotional and surprising way. I can't wait to dive right into it and bring this chapter to life along with the truly superb cast and filmmakers involved." [via Movieline]

What Do 'Twilight' Stars Have Lined Up Before 'Dawn'?

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and the rest are all keeping busy before the final installment hits theaters in November.
By Jocelyn Vena

With "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" nearly behind them, the stars of the "Twilight Saga" have some busy schedules ahead of the film's November release for some other movies.

Just this week alone, Robert Pattinson picked up two more films, hot off the heels of several other casting updates for his "Twilight" co-stars. It's almost getting hard to know when and where you'll see the actors next, so MTV News is rounding it all up in this little guide:

Robert Pattinson
He's already banked two intriguing movies: "Cosmopolis," which hits Cannes this month, and "Bel Ami," which will be available on VOD Friday (May 4) before going to theaters June 8. But it's been a busy week for RPattz. He just added two more projects to his docket: the Saddam Hussein thriller "Mission: Blacklist" and "Rover," in which he'll be hunted down by Guy Pearce for stealing a car.

Kristen Stewart
With less than a month until the release of "Snow White and the Huntsman," the blockbuster will get the "MTV First" treatment on Tuesday, when Stewart and her co-stars will stop by MTV with an exclusive look at the movie. Later this year, that other book-to-film adaptation, "On the Road," will hit theaters. In it, she plays Garrett Hedlund's drug-loving teenage bride, Marylou. Stewart has lined up some more interesting projects, including a "micro-cameo" in her mom's prison movie "K-11." She'll also explore the art of (faked) snuff films in the flick "Cali."

Taylor Lautner
After leaving the toy flick "Stretch Armstrong," Lautner recently picked up a completely different kind of movie: He's set to star alongside Adam Sandler and crew in "Grown Ups 2."

Kellan Lutz
He's got a number of projects that still need to hit the big screen, like "Syrup, "Bumped" and "Java Heat." But he's not resting: Lutz just landed the title role in a performance-capture, 3-D take on "Tarzan," according to The Hollywood Reporter; Spencer Locke has been locked in to play his Jane.

Ashley Greene
Although she has several movies set to hit theaters, including this week's "LOL" with Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore and the very scary "Apparition" out in August, she is also making a name for herself on the small screen. She's attached to the ABC show "Americana" about real-life fashion designer Robert Soulter. Greene will play an up-and-coming Big Apple fashionista on the soap.

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

Things are really heating up for the summer movie season. We've got the release of "Marvel's The Avengers" this week, "Battleship" soon after and the very buzz-worthy action adventure "Snow White and the Huntsman" arrives June 1, marking the debut of Kristen Stewart as an action star.

MTV News is very proud to announce that we will be offering fans an exclusive first look at the film via "MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman" on Tuesday, May 8. Stewart and co-stars Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin will be live on MTV's airwaves at 7:56 p.m. ET to premiere the exclusive clip, after which they will stick around for a Q&A on MTV.com hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action by submitting their reactions to the clip in the comments section or on Twitter (using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst). During "MTV First," the four stars will also answer your Twitter questions and dish on the very latest news.

In order to help tide you over until the big reveal next week, here's a little interview snippet from Stewart in which she discusses her preparation for mastering the English accent required for her role as the titular Snow White.

"I worked on it for a while, so I was really lucky, I didn't have to jump right in," Stewart said of her ample pre-production time. "I would have been terrified [if I had to jump in], so I felt really confident with it when I went into it. I didn't feel like I was attached to specific lines and stuff, which I would kill myself if I felt that I had to know exactly what I was going to say."

Stewart has received rave reviews for her performance from director Rupert Sanders.

"Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director's point of view, it's great to get into her headspace," Sanders told MTV News. "We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she's gung-ho."

Don't miss "MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman" on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:56 p.m. on MTV, followed by a Q&A with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin on MTV.com!

Anne Hathaway's Short Hair: 'Do or Don't?

Hair today, gone tomorrow. Apparently this awful play on words applies to Anne Hathaway, whose short hair raised eyebrows in London this weekend.

Hard at work filming the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables in London, the stunning actress showed off just how much she's gotten into character.

Leaving The Box nightclub with fiance Adam Shulman, Anne debuted a close-cropped, much shorter 'do - a stark contrast to her usual long brown locks.

In Les Miserables, she portrays Fantine, a prostitutewith a terminal case of tuberculosis who is forced to sell her hair in to provide for her daughter, Cosette.

She's also drastically cut calories in an effort to slim down for the role. What do you think of her new hairstyle? Vote for her best look below:

Dan Savage Clarifies Condemnation of "Pansy Ass" Christians

Dan Savage - the activist responsible for the It Gets Better campaign in response to bullying - stirred up a bit of controversy this week when he gave a speech at the National High School Journalist Conference in Seattle and told those in attendance:

We can learn to “learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people.”

Savage went on to compare these passages to those regarding shell fish, menstruation and, especially, slavery, saying the bible is a "pro-slavery document," but we've grown to look past those parts while honoring what's really important within its pages.

Watch video excerpts of the lecture now, as about a dozen attendees get up and walk out in response to Savage's comments:

“It’s funny, as someone who’s on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible, how pansy-ass some people react when you push back,” he said to students leaving in protest, although Savage apologized for this phrasing in a blog post on Sunday, writing:

I would like to apologize for describing that walk out as a pansy-a---- move. I wasn’t calling the handful of students who left pansies (2800+ students, most of them Christian, stayed and listened), just the walk-out itself. But that’s a distinction without a difference—kinda like when religious conservatives tells their gay friends that they ‘love the sinner, hate the sin.’

They’re often shocked when their gay friends get upset because, hey, they were making a distinction between the person (lovable!) and the person’s actions (not so much!). But gay people feel insulted by ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ because it is insulting. Likewise, my use of ‘pansy-a----’ was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong. And I apologize for saying it.

But is Savage sorry for his analysis of the bible? No.

“I did not attack Christianity. I attacked hypocrisy," he says.

SHOULD Savage apologize? You tell us:

Ashton Kutcher Popchips Ad Pulled Admist Racism Outcry

For a phony online dating ad - in which he stars on behalf of his role as Popchips' “president of pop culture" - Ashton Kutcher dons multiple costumes and pretends to be four different eligible bachelors.

There's a character named Raj, for example, that features the actor in brown face and and with an Indian accent.

And while it's all meant to be in good fun, many on the Internet have not reacted with laughter.

“I can’t imagine I have to explain this to anyone in 2012, but if you find yourself putting brown makeup on a white person in 2012 so they can do a bad “funny” accent in order to sell potato chips, you are on the wrong course," wrote Anil Dash, a tech blogger, in response to the spot. "Make some different decisions."

And Popchips now has: the company has pulled the ad from YouTube and Facebook, while releasing the following statement:

"The new Popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone. At Popchips we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended."

What do YOU think? Should the spot have been removed from the Internet?

Adam 'MCA' Yauch, Dead at 47: A Big-Screen Tribute

Beastie Boys rapper's film contributions include star-studded short "Fight For Your Right Revisited."
By Fallon Prinzivalli

After a long bout with cancer, the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch died on Friday (May 4). The rapper's death comes as a huge blow to fans of his work with the iconic trio, but he'll also be remembered for the imprint he left on the film world.

While he's widely known as a co-founder of the Brooklyn hip-hop group, MCA was an accomplished director and producer, and his music is featured on an array of popular music soundtracks. The Hollywood community took to Twitter this afternoon to share their thoughts, with Ben Stiller tweeting, "So sad that Adam Yauch is gone. A truly great musician & filmmaker. He stood for integrity as an artist. What a loss. He was a very good man." While Jonah Hill followed up with a heartfelt tweet: "I'm filled with so much sorrow to hear about the world losing Adam Yauch. He was such a beautiful person and artist. My heart is broken."

As fans mourn the loss, MTV News honors his career and achievements on the big screen.

"Fight for Your Right Revisited"
The comedic short was Yauch's most recent writing and direction project and it debuted at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. With as ensemble cast that includes Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Susan Sarandon, Will Arnett and Stanley Tucci, the story picks up from the raging party at the close of the trio's 1987 "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" music video. The sequel follows the Beastie Boys and their delinquent antics as they break into a bodega to steal beer and try to out-breakdance their future selves.

"Awesome: I F---in' Shot That!"
Yauch produced and directed this memorable Beasties documentary, using footage shot by 50 fans at their 2004 Madison Square Garden concert. Audience members were given video cameras and asked to shoot the whole show. The project was meant to re-create for viewers at the home the exhilarating fan-experience of attending a sold-out show. Interestingly enough, MCA's producer credit for the project is under the name of Nathaniel Hornblower, Yauch's "Swiss uncle" and alter ego.

Oscilloscope
In 2008, Yauch made his directorial debut with "Gunnin' for That #1 Spot," a doc about street basketball. The film follows eight of 24 high-school basketball players competing in the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic at Harlem, New York's famed Rucker Park. Of the eight players Yauch chose, six now have careers in the NBA, proving his eye for talent.

"Gunnin' " also marked one of his production company's first efforts. Oscilloscope Laboratories has gone on to distribute a number of well-known works, including "Howl," the Allen Ginsberg biopic starring James Franco, and the Oscar-nominated thriller "We Need to Talk About Kevin," starring Tilda Swinton. The company recently announced that they had acquired the rights to the documentary "The Apple Pushers," which tells the stories of immigrant street vendors who sell fruits and vegetables in poor New York City neighborhoods. The film is narrated by Edward Norton.

Soundtracks
MCA's music with the Beastie Boys has been featured on countless movie soundtracks, including "Baby Mama," "17 Again," J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," "Shrek Forever After," "Iron Man 2," "Horrible Bosses" and the Hugh Jackman robotic-action flick "Real Steel." They also had hit songs featured in the video games "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" ("Sabotage") and "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground" ("Electric Worm").

Share your condolences for MCA's family, friends and fans in the comments below.

Tune in to MTV tonight at 8 p.m. for "Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy," an hour-long special hosted by Sway celebrating the life and career of Adam "MCA" Yauch, including his biggest moments and remembrances from his friends and peers. 'The Avengers': The Reviews Are In!

Reviews are glowing for director Joss Whedon's star-studded superhero epic.
By Josh Wigler

Impossibly high expectations, assemble! The moment that Marvel fans far and wide have been waiting years for has arrived at last: "The Avengers," directed by Joss Whedon and featuring a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, has finally landed in theaters nationwide.

Anyone worried that Marvel couldn't live up to its own hype with "Avengers" need only look at the reviews to see that Earth's Mightiest Heroes have indeed performed to the best of their ability. Not only is "Avengers" an international box-office success and a soon-to-be domestic hit, the film is also adored by critics, geeks and moviegoers of all other assorted shapes and sizes.

Keep reading for a selection of the glowing "Avengers" reviews!

The Man Behind The Curtain
"As screenwriter, sharer of story credit with Zak Penn and director, Whedon is the key reason why this $220-million behemoth of a movie is smartly thought out and executed with verve and precision. It may be overly long at two hours, 23 minutes, but so much is going on you might not even notice. Whedon's biggest success, creating TV's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' was nowhere near this scale. But he is a third-generation television writer who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing 'Toy Story,' and he's got an innate gift for bringing stories like this to life with the energy and intelligence that should be popular entertainment's birthright but rarely is." — Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times

Earth's Mightiest Heroes
"Downey's Tony Stark remains driven by ego and genius, always on the verge of overreaching, while Hemsworth continues to navigate between two worlds. As a man out of time, unsure of how he fits into the modern world, or if he even wants to, Evans shoulders even more of the drama, becoming the heart of a film that's filled with heroics, but also, if sometimes too fleetingly, concerned with the meaning of heroism. Fitting right in: Ruffalo's laidback Banner, a characterization with echoes of the easy-living California dude he played in 'The Kids Are All Right,' Johansson's haunted superspy, and Renner, whose steely intensity alone makes it easy to forget the unlikelihood of an archer, no matter how good, being able to hold his own among superhumans." — Keith Phipps, The A.V. Club

The Laugh Factor
" 'The Avengers' may be one of the funniest movies of the year. Whereas 'Iron Man 2' was overdose, having other leads to dilute Downey Jr.'s manic mouth helps Tony Stark finally land his punchlines. Evans is another standout, his fish-out-of-water predicament lending itself to comedy that clicks ('I got that reference,' Captain Steve Rogers timidly points out). But Hulk takes the cake, Whedon mining the towering green monster for all-out destruction and physical comedy. When Hulk smashes, he smashes big and Whedon's clever timing is reminiscent of old Warner Bros. cartoons." — Matt Patches, Hollywood.com

The Big Fight
"Much of this battle takes place in midtown Manhattan, where the neatest sequences involve Loki's ginormous slithering, undulating snake-lizard-dragon machine, which seems almost to have a mind of its own and is backed up by countless snakelings. At one point, an Avenger flies into the mouth of this leviathan and penetrates its entire length, emerging at the business end. You won't see that in 'The Human Centipede.' " — Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times

The Final Word
"It's essentially six movies in one, which might account for the nearly 2 1/2 hour length. While it's slow getting started, 'The Avengers' is a splashy superhero mash-up that should please breathless fanboys. It also has a broader appeal for mass audiences with its fast-paced comic banter and exhilarating action sequences under the capable helm of director/co-writer/unabashed fan Joss Whedon. Whedon weaves a story that allows each of the heroes to do what they do best. And while they may not have exactly equal time, audiences get enough of each to feel satisfied, but not sated. Clever work, indeed." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Wasp Was Almost in 'The Avengers'

Sure, "The Avengers" movie -- which will be released in the U.S. this Friday after already breaking box office records all over the world this past weekend -- may be your most eagerly anticipated movie event of the year, but some fans might be just a little let-down by the absence of one of the team's founding members in the comics, Janet Van Dyne, AKA the Wasp. Turns out, however, the heroine almost made the cut...

DVD Blu-Ray: 'Haywire,' 'Living In The Material World,' 'New Year's Eve'

Moviefone's Pick of the Week "Haywire" What's It About? "Ocean's 11" director Steven Soderbergh takes a shot at the action-thriller genre, telling the story of a butt-kicking black ops soldier who is double-crossed on a mission and goes on a path of revenge. See It Because: It's not anything revolutionary in terms of storytelling, but the masterful director has a lot of fun riffing on the action movie staple. What makes "Haywire" stand out is that he loads his cast with great actors like Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Michael Douglas. And best of all, the film's tough-as-nails lead is played by the legit MMA champion Gina Carano.

Paulina Gretzky Posts, Removes More Racy Photos

Paulina Gretzky is up to it again. Or at least she was.

About five months after the daughter of the greatest professional hockey in history created an online stir by posting a series of bikini photos to Twitter - only to quickly remove them and delete her account with no explanation - the 23-year old blonde has moved on to Instagram.

Gretzky once again published a slew of kind of racy pictures this week... but then quickly took them down. This is the Internet, however, so the images live on in eternity. Herewith, a sampling:

It's unclear what the big deal is. These pics are less revealing that Sofia Vergara's latest spread in GQ. And it's not as though her father is running for political office.

Unless... Wayne Gretzky for Canadian Prime Minister?!? You read it here first.

Robert Pattinson Set To Hunt Down Saddam Hussein In 'Mission: Blacklist'

RPattz will play the man who helped capture the Iraqi leader in 2003.

Robert Pattinson is on a "Mission: Blacklist" in his new thriller. The heartthrob is set to star in the big-screen adaptation of the Eric Maddox book that tells the story of the man who played a vital role in the campaign to capture Saddam Hussein.

The film is being adapted by "Band of Brothers" writer/producer Erik Jendresen from Maddox's book "Mission: Black List #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Davin Seay co-wrote the book with Maddox, who was the military interrogator that played a key role in the 2003 capture of the Iraqi leader.

The film will be directed by Jean-Stephane Sauvaire and is expected to get shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival this month. Pattinson will be there to promote his David Cronenberg film, "Cosmopolis."

"This movie is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller," producer Ross M. Dinerstein said in a statement about the film, according to The Baltimore Sun. "I have been inspired by Robert and Jean-Stephane's dedication to tell this story in the most authentic way possible."

"Mission: Blacklist" is the latest edgy, unexpected film that Pattinson has added to his post-"Twilight" résumé, which includes Cronenberg's trippy "Cosmopolis" and the sexy costume drama "Bel Ami." Pattinson's final "Twilight" film, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," is set for release in November.

While "Mission" is still in development, Pattinson recently returned to the "Twilight Saga" set to film reshoots for "Breaking Dawn."

PART 2: Bobby Brown Talks Whitney's Funeral And Bobby Kristina's Wild Ways On "Today"

The "TODAY" show aired the second part of their exclusive Bobby Brown interview earlier this morning.  And in his first in-depth chat since the death of Whitney Houston, Bobby talked about what happened on the day of the funeral, his DUI and if he thinks Bobbi Kristina is an addict.

Bobby Brown sat down with Matt Lauer this morning for his first interview since the death of Whitney Houston.  He began by discussing why he left the funeral of his ex-wife.....before it began.

He said that security (not the Houston family) asked him to move his "entourage" (which he says were his children) to make accomodations for other guests.  Bobby said by the third time, he'd had enough.

"I decided that, you know, it'd be best if I just left.  I kissed the casket, and me and my children left the building."

Matt then asked him about his recent DUI arrest and Bobby claimed that he has been "clean and sober" from narcotics for 7 years but still had an cocktail every now and then.  Sigh....Bobby - alcohol is your drug!  You are not clean and sober.

Bobby addressed rumors of Bobbi Kristina's drug use and rumored relationship with her "adopted" brother in a very vague manner.

"I know what she is actually doing," Brown said. "I think people are, you know, making assumptions of what my daughter is and how strong she is. People tend to want to control strong-willed people. And that's what I see. … I am her father. She talks to me about everything."

He never denied her drug use.....past or present.

Then he was joined by his three oldest children who did a good job of backing up his claims of being a good father.  Both daughter LaPrincia and son Landon say his bad boy image has followed him throughout life, but that's not who he really is as a father.

In one very candid moment, LaPrince revealed that she and Bobbi Kris had always been close, but lately their relationship has grown apart.  She fought back tears while saying this.

Bobbi Kristina declined the interview.

'The Expendables 2' Liam Hemsworth Poster Debut (PHOTO)

Liam Hemsworth's blockbuster movie plate is getting pretty full. When he's not busy fighting in the Panem revolution of "The Hunger Games," he's earning his old-school action stripes alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis in "The Expendables 2." The highly anticipated sequel to the 2010 macho throwback re-teams the elite special ops for another high-risk mission. This time around, Barney Ross adds a few more experience vets like Jean Claude Van Damme and Chuck freakin' Norris. But he also smartly targets the 18-25 demographic with the addition of Hemsworth's Bill "The Kid" Timmons. Does Liam have the chops to stand alongside Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren? Check out his debuting character poster below!

Ever wonder what it would sound like to hear Tom Cruise belt out the Guns N' Roses classic "Paradise City"? Well, you won't have to wait much longer: That track opens up the "Rock of Ages" soundtrack, which drops June 5.

In addition to "Paradise City," the star will also put his spin on a number of other rock classics, both solo and alongside the cast's other A-listers. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise is featured on Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," Foreigner's classic "I Want to Know What Love Is," Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me," Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again," Poison's "Every Rose Has its Thorn," Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

The actor's singing abilities have been praised by his "Ages" co-stars, including Malin Akerman and Julianne Hough, as well as director Adam Shankman.

"We have definitely never seen him do this before. A lot of the joy in this for him was just the adventure of trying something that was so foreign," Shankman explained to MTV News about Cruise's part in the film, which opens June 15. "I think part of the reason that he said 'Yes' to doing it was that he was so stunned that he was asked, and he thought, 'Oh my god, of all the millions of things I've done in my career, nothing has ever been like this.' He's a guy who loves challenges."

The full track list for the "Rock of Ages" soundtrack:

» "Paradise City" - Tom Cruise
» "Sister Christian" / "Just Like Paradise" / "Nothin' but a Good Time" - Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin

Moron Amber Portwood Ordered to Quit Freeloading Off Government Housing

Teen Mom star Amber Portwood has been ordered by a judge to pay money to compensate the real estate company that was suing to evict her. Why?

For lying about her income and qualifying, illegally, for government subsidized housing as a result of that lie. Some people will do anything for a buck.

While Portwood was in jail this winter, a rental company sued her for eviction after they saw she lied about her "low-income" status on her application.

Amber's income in 2010? A modest $280,000.

Gary Shirley, Amber Portwood

Amber and baby daddy Gary Shirley in happier times.

This disqualifies her from subsidized government housing, clearly, and an Indiana judge ruled in the rental company's favor in the case earlier this month.

Amber Portwood not bothering to respond to the suit probably didn't help her cause. She must pay the company back or face further legal consequences.

Otherwise it's back to the slammer, most likely, given that she's been on thin ice with probation as it is. At least jail is free, however. Food for thought.

Jordan Hill Charged with Assault, Vows to Play On

Jordan Hill, a power forward the Los Angeles Lakers acquired from the Houston Rockets about halfway through the season, has been charged with felony assault stemming from an alleged altercation in February.

Jordan Hill Pictre

According to police, Hill faces accusations that he pushed and choked 28-year old Darlene Luna, his girlfriend of two years, on the afternoon of February 29.

If convicted of the third-degree felony, Hill would face a sentence of two to 10 years in jail, along with a $10,00 fine. He will have to face the charge inside a Houston tomorrow morning, while the team is scheduled to play its second game of the playoffs tomorrow evening.

But Hill practiced with the Lakers today and faced the media afterward. He released a statement that said he'd remain focused on Los Angeles' drive to a title.

"I'm saddened to learn of the accusations that were filed against me today. At this time I cannot comment further other than to say that my attorneys are working to gather all of the facts and evidence and I plan to cooperate completely with the authorities.

"I'd like to apologize to the Lakers organization and to all of their fans for the untimeliness of these accusations. I promise to keep my focus and attention on the playoffs during this time and to helping my team win another championship."

Hill had a very strong opening game in the Lakers defeat of the Nuggets on Sunday, pulling down 10 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Which Is Better: Movies Or TV?

Tough choice this weekend: You could go to the multiplex and catch such acclaimed new features as superhero epic "The Avengers," romantic comedy "Think Like a Man" or stop-motion animation gem "The Pirates! Band of Misfits." Or, you could stay home and watch new episodes of brainy period drama "Mad Men" or the sprawling fantasy "Game of Thrones."

But many people will probably wait until those movies come out on Netflix and stream them at home, or DVR those series and then watch them in blocks. At that point, with the viewing experience digitized, flattened, squeezed, shrunk, re-shaped, and rescheduled for our convenience, the distinction between whether the story began as a movie or TV show won't matter anymore.

That's why it's quaint to read an article like James Wolcott's in the recent "television issue" of Vanity Fair magazine, arguing for TV's supremacy over movies, or a rebuttal like Mark Olsen's, in the Los Angeles Times, insisting that movies still rule. The truth is, while each has its advantages, the digital tsunami threatens to wash those differences away, to the point where all that remains are our endless demand for visual storytelling and an industry rushing to meet it. Wolcott's argument isn't new, though his restatement of it is elegantly written. To him, TV is superior for its superior writing, its novelistic ability to allow characters to develop and grow, and most of all, for its watercooler urgency -- that is, its ability to unite large groups of people the next morning to talk about it. Movies used to have these traits, but no longer. Olsen's argument seems to concede most of Wolcott's points but still insists that films offer the compact efficiency of narrative closure (two hours is all you need for a complete cathartic ride), the unique auteurist vision of great directors (something that gets suppressed when those same directors shoot individual episodes of a TV series) and the immersive experience and overwhelming visual spectacle of the movie theater. And there are still movies with cultural urgency (say, anything by James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, or Quentin Tarantino) that everyone will be talking about, not just the next day, but for months and years. But these arguments are incomplete. Both ignore Sturgeon's Law, the maxim that 90 percent of everything is crap. When Wolcott says TV has better storylines and more flattering showcases for women, he's not talking about "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" or "American Idol" or anything broadly popular; he's talking about niche cable shows that have critical and ardent cult followings but not mass appeal. Same with Olsen, who cites a lot of art-house films that Wolcott and most other moviegoers haven't seen; he's not making a case for "The Lucky One," "Think Like a Man," or "Wrath of the Titans." Both writers also ignore the commercial imperatives behind most of what's released in each medium (the need for advertiser or subscriber support on TV, the need to have as big an opening weekend as possible in movies) that result in creative timidity and mediocrity in all but a few cases. One thing both essays do touch on is the changing media landscape wrought by the shift from analog to digital entertainment. It's made the movies more like TV and TV more like the movies. Celluloid film is all but gone from theaters now, so what you're watching on the big screen looks very much like the array of pixels you'd see at home. 3D was supposed to be the theatrical innovation that got us off our couches and back into theaters, but home 3D screens will be commonplace in a few years. Just last week, Peter Jackson previewed for theater owners the latest digital innovation: 3D movies like his first "Hobbit" installment (due at the end of 2012) that are shot at 48 frames per second (twice the frame speed that has defined movies for about 90 years), packing twice as much visual information into each second of play and all but eliminating strobing and flickering. Viewers of the demonstration complained that the visuals looked too real, like videotape. So the latest advance in cinemas will be movies that look even more like TV. Of course, people seem to be going to the movies less and less, which means that a movie is less about the immersive experience of a giant screen in a darkened auditorium with hundreds of strangers and more about the content alone, watched on a smaller screen (maybe much smaller, like a couple inches wide), by yourself. The specialness of the movie theater experience is something we don't value much anymore; it's been devalued by the increasing arduousness and cost of a night at the movies, by home viewing options that offer ease and comfort and convenience and economy, and by the mediocre quality of much of the film release slate, something we don't mind so much when we're watching the same mediocre films at home for a fraction of the cost. We used to watch movies at home on DVDs, but the industry wants discs to go the way of celluloid, to be replaced by cheaper streaming files that we'll keep not on our shelves but in virtual lockers floating in the Internet cloud. So we're soon to be completely divorced from movies even as physical objects -- no longer the result of light reflected from real objects and captured in silver on a strip of celluloid, or even those same images digitized and burned onto a disc, but merely a string of 1s and 0s generated inside a computer and sent to you via a computer, without ever having touched the real world. We can also make TV more like movies, watching shows on a living-room entertainment setup whose large screen and surround-sound audio approach a cinema-quality experience. We can watch series in marathon blocks, turning a few episodes into an epic-length, movie-like session. Of course, if we miss a few episodes, we can stream them sometime later, so that TV programming becomes a disembodied digital file, just like a film. Freed not from physical concreteness but the temporal concreteness of the weekly schedule, TV loses its specialness as well, just like movies. One area where movies still have an edge over TV is glamour and prestige. After all, which would you rather win, an Oscar or an Emmy? Would you rather be known as a movie star or a TV star? Then again, stars are becoming increasingly irrelevant in movies, where the concept itself (a familiar title, an established franchise) is the star and actors are interchangeable or easily replaced by digitally generated characters. Hollywood still needs stars to promote the movies at premieres, but that need for glitz will diminish as theaters vanish and premieres take place in the theater in your living room -- or in the tablet on your lap, or the smartphone in your pocket. When that happens, no one will be arguing anymore about which kind of visual story has more cultural primacy or watercooler urgency because there won't be a collective experience for us to talk about. Movies and TV will continue to be the repositories of our dreams and fears, but they won't be the way we talk to each other about those dreams and fears, not when they're all just digital snippets stored on third-party servers, just streaming clips that each of us watches on his or her own schedule, on his or her own screen.
