President's Day is the perfect day to talk about Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling mash-up of history and horror. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and produced by Tim Burton, the film finds the 16th U.S. President not only dealing with slavery and rival politicians but also having to slay some pesky vampires.
Author Grahame-Smith co-wrote the screenplay and was a part of a special "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Revealed!" event at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield, Illinois on February 10th, along with director Bekmambetov and the actor who plays Lincoln in the film, Benjamin Walker. The special event was put on by 20th Century Fox who invited a select group of journalists (including About.com contributing writer Melissa Molina) to not only get a peek at some of the footage but also to interview the cast and take a private tour of the historical treasures housed at the museum. The Gettysburg Address, Emancipation Proclamation, and the 13th Amendment were among the items on display for the special event, as well as Lincoln's bloodied gloves and his stovepipe hat. The group also took a nighttime tour of the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site where the bodies of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of his four sons reside.
Check out what Seth Grahame-Smith had to say about his mash-up of genres and about the film version of his bestselling novel while at the Springfield event:
