Berkeley Breathed's young son Milo provided the inspiration for Breathed's Mars Needs Moms book after a particularly bad evening at the dinner table. Milo apparently wasn't happy about being served broccoli by his mom and had some choice words to say about the vegetable - and his mother. Breathed recalled the event that spawned a book while at the film's premiere: "It was a bad night, and I wrote the book that night as a way to explain to him how moms are special. It didn't occur to me to actually turn it into a book until much later when it worked so well as a parable for him, that it might work as a book and might work as a movie. And four years later, what do you know?"
Breathed was joined on the red carpet by co-writer/director Simon Wells and co-writer Wendy Wells who makes her feature film writing debut with the Disney comedy. Prior to taking in a special screening, the Wells family discussed bringing Breathed's book to the big screen in a performance capture film:
