New Line's horror/thriller The Rite starring Sir Anthony Hopkins topped the box office with a decent but not spectacular $15 million. According to Box Office Mojo, The Rite marks the highest opening film in which Hopkins' receives top billing (not including his Hannibal Lecter films). But the box office overall was still down from last year when Avatar was working its magic in theaters.Meanwhile, the new take on The Mechanic starring Jason Statham in the role played by Charles Bronson in the original film did well enough to place third. Next weekend The Rite and The Mechanic will have competition from the James Cameron-produced underwater survival story, Sanctum, and Screen Gems' thriller, The Roommate.
